There is nothing particularly glamorous or refined about the Exploders. With their roots in esteemed thrash outfits like the Stinkies, the Leather Uppers, and Smallmouth, the Toronto quartet deals in garage-rock essentials. New Variations packs 11 songs in under 27 minutes, driven by the thud-rock riffs of 'Classy' Craig Daniels and eloquent shouting by well-afroed singer Simon Pius. Two-minute singalongs like 'Candy Floss' and 'Humanoids from the Deep' capture the spirit of Detroit, while producer Ian Blurton adds ballast and a blowtorch touch.
